Here are a few key facts about John Kappas's dream therapy

• Kappasinian created by Dr John Kappas PHD hypnotherapist and founder HMI (Hypnosis Motivation Institute). Continues to be taught by son George.

• Based on the principle that each human is unique.

• 'A person can only measure their own dreams-the therapist is a guide to help the dreamer translate'.

• Each colour/item/context takes the dreamer on a journey that has been built and created from their own experiences.

• The important thing is to remember the dream, record the symbols and then apply specific and individual meanings to things.

• Kappa's argues it is impossible to know exactly what something is like from another's perspective.

• Associated words are usually found through brainstorming exercises. Words (Key words) lead to other meanings I.e. envelopes-letters-sending-news-don't know what news is-useless.

• Each individual is different and so in this case, the woman's own meanings and attachments to the final images are important for their own interpretations.

• Ask questions to stimulate meaning recognition.

• With life experience and breaking down symbol by symbol leads to the client gaining a greater sense of self awareness and their own dream analysis.

• Kappasinian insists that the person analysing the dream should not be an expert. How can one person understand the life of another?

• John Kappa's believed that it is important to work out what time of night the dream took place.

• If the dreamer wakes during REM there is a high possibility the dream will be remembered.

• 4-5 phases of sleep usually between 90 minutes to 2 hours occur at night.

• Evidence has been collected which proves most people have 3-4 dreams in a night.

• Dreams occur in three stages wishful thinking, Precognitive and Venting.

• Wishful thinking tends to be final images and stimulations of the day, simple as images from a movie to a set of worries a person holds.

• The wishful thinking that takes place needs to be referenced to the time of day/night the stimulation came.

• The precognitive stage would be useful for the dreamer to work out his/her problems.

• It is through this 2nd stage that the brain tries to offer solutions and advice to the conscious mind.

• Dreams from this point of reference need to be examined.

• The venting stage is the stage where something could not be resolved or was itself a resolution.

• This 3rd stage is the client's worry, unresolved issues. The client should be encouraged to find the root as the trouble in the dream represents something that needs to be addressed.

• Kappa's believed that many Psychological responses could also be explained Physiologically. For example the feeling of 'falling' could be down to blood sugar levels.

• External Stimuli can play a part on our dreams and form things that have nothing to do with our subconscious for example hearing bells in a dream only to wake up to an alarm going off.

• Kappa's believed timing was important in dreaming. What time of the day/year/era was the dream?

• Content of dreams can be symbolic or literal. Ice-cream could mean the dreamer loves ice-cream or it could be something deeper that can be found through word associations.

• Emotions in dreams can act as triggers to underlying problems.

• Kappa's stresses there are no experts when it comes to dream interpretation unless you are an expert on yourself.

• Keep a journal because it will be the most important book on dreams you ever read. It helps to keep track, give the dreamer dream intuition and symbols/patterns to look back on.
